For those looking for the quintessential Georgian Bath experience, absolutely in the heart of the city, this is the house. The World Heritage city of Bath has the highest concentration of Georgian architecture in England and is full of hidden gems, this being one of them.
It is an elegant, bright, beautifully preserved Grade II Georgian house built from honey-coloured stone and dating from about 1730. The double-fronted house retains many Georgian features such as fireplaces, panelled rooms, original sash windows, wooden shutters, window seats, and exposed oak beams. A leafy courtyard, with garden furniture, at the back, is a delightful bonus.
Tucked away in a cobbled cul-de-sac, it is quiet and pleasantly removed from the hubbub of the city centre, though it is actually a stone's throw from all the city has to offer. It is an easy walk from the train and bus station, and parking outside for unloading purposes only is easy.
The front door from the pavement opens to a small hall. To the right is the panelled drawing room with fireplace and large windows at each end, one with a view to the street and the other looking to the leafy courtyard. To the left is the panelled parlour, which has a panelled "shell" alcove and fireplace: a fine room for arrivals.
The terracotta-tiled floor below provides a large open-plan kitchen and diner/lounge, with exposed wooden beams and large stone fireplace. The kitchen has a traditional Aga cooker as well as an electric hob and oven. The cosy diner/lounge has dining table and chairs, as well as comfortable leather club chairs. Off the vestibule leading to the garden is a w.c. and cloakroom. The back door leads to a delightful, tranquil, cool and sunny courtyard garden with potted shrubs and trees.
The first floor provides a double bedded bedroom with en-suite bathroom with shower cubicle, basin and w.c. and a twin bedded room. Both rooms are panelled and with fireplaces.
The second floor provides a twin room suitably equipped and a large bathroom with fitted bath, separate shower cubicle, basin, and w.c.
On the third floor there are two single bedrooms, which enjoy views of the pinnacled spires of Bath Abbey.
The floors are linked by a beautiful period walnut staircase, with radiating floor panels on each landing.
Future visitors will be pleased with the location and delighted with the interior of this unique house.
